URI Keeps NCAA Tournament Hopes Alive With Win Over St. Bonaventure

Hassan Martin leads URI to a A-10 Tournament quarterfinal win.
The University of Rhode Island Rams kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive on Friday afternoon with a 74-63 win over St. Bonaventure in the A-10 Tournament quarterfinals.

URI will now face Davidson in the semi-finals on Saturday with a berth in the A-10 Championship game on the line. Davidson upset top-seeded Dayton earlier in the day.

For URI, getting to the A-10 title game could mean getting an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

URI's Defense Gets it Done

Rhode Island was able to overcome 13 missed free throws by forcing the Bonnies into 13 turnovers and holding them to just 38% shooting from the field. The Bonnies only shot 20% from three.

Hassan Martin also came up with three blocked shots in the game and is 11 blocks away from the URI All-time record.

After leading by six at the half, URI watched the Bonnies open the half on a 9-2 run to take a 35-34 lead with 17 minutes left in the half.

From that point, URI went on a 23-9 run sparked by an E.C. Matthews three to take a 57-44 lead with 9 minutes to play. The Rams run was capped off by a three from freshman Jeff Dowtin.

The Rams would build up as much as a 14 point lead before the Bonnies would get within ten on two different occasions.

However, they would get no closer.

URI Grabs 1st Half Lead

Despite missing 10 free throws in the first half, the Rams took a 32-26 lead into the break, in large part due to their defense.

The Rams held St. Bonaventure without a field goal for the final four minutes of the half, while holding them to 41.7% shooting from the field in the period.

Rhode Island also forced the Bonnies into 11 turnovers.

Leading the Way

Matthews led URI up with 20 points, while Martin followed up with 19 points and eight rebounds.
