Matthews Scores 8 Points in OT to Lead URI Past Davidson 73-70

Matthews wins it for URI
E.C. Matthews scored eight points in the overtime period to keep the URI Rams NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a 73-70 win over Davidson on Saturday night at the Ryan Center. 

With URI up one, 71-70, and just 36 seconds left, Matthews called his own number and drove to the basket and converted a layup to give the Rams a 73-70 lead.

Davidson’s Peyton Aldridge would miss a three with just a second to play sealing URI’s win.

“We showed tremendous resiliency throughout this game. I thought our two seniors delivers and kept us in it before our wing guys were able to pick it up. Hassan and Kuran just carried us. This game was kind of like a microcosm of the entire year. We’ve been resilient all season, have wobbled at points and have fought back - just like we did tonight. We fought hard this entire season and we’re confident going into the Atlantic 10 tournament. This team is ready to do something special,” said URI head coach Dan Hurley after the game.  

Matthews, who has had ups and downs all season, dominated the overtime period. 

With URI trailing 66-65 with 2:52 to play, Matthews converted a layup to give the Rams a 67-66 lead with 2:31 to play. 

Matthews knocked dow two free throws to put URI up 69-66, Davidson cut it to one on two free throws of their own with 1:26 to play. 

On URI’s ensuing possession, Matthews drove to the basket and threw down a dunk to put the Rams back up three, 71-68 with 1:11 to play in the game. 

He would then go on to convert the layup that would seal the game for URI. 

He would finish the game with 18 points. 

Robinson Saves URI's Season 

The Rams were set to inbound the ball on the sideline coming out of a timeout with ten seconds left in the game.

However, after not being able to find Matthews, URI was called for a five second violation, giving Davidson the ball back. 

Davidson got the ball back and got it in the hands of Will Magarity just under the basket.

Magarity went up for a layup to end the game, but had his shot blocked by Stanford Robinson to send the game to overtime. 

URI Comes Back 

The Rams trailed by nine, 51-42, with 8:38 left to play in the game before their comeback began. 

Rhode Island went on a 17-8 run to tie the game at 59 on a Hassan Martin layup with 1:31 left to play in the game. 

The Rams would grab the lead with 46 seconds left on another basket by Hassan Martin. The lead was URI's first since 34-33 in the opening minute of the second half. 

Robinson would add a free throw to give URI a three point lead, 62-59, with 24 seconds left on the clock. 

On Davidson's ensuing possession, Jack Gibbs knocked down a three to tie the game at 62. 

Rams Trail at Half

A Kuran Iverson three gave the Rams a two point lead, 27-25, with 6:52 left to play in the half. He finished the half with 11 points. 

From that point, Davidson went on an 8-0 run to take a 33-27 33-27 lead following a Jordan Watkins layup with 3:09 left to play in the half. 

The Rams would rally with a three from Jarvis Garrett and then a layup by Kuran Iverson to go into the half down just one point, 33-32. 

Next up 

The Rams will return to action in the A-10 Tournament on Friday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m. 

URI enters the tournament as a 4-seed.
