URI Soccer Wins A-10 Title, Advances to NCAA Tournament

URI soccer advances to NCAA Tournament
The University of Rhode Island men’s soccer team is going to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams defeated George Mason 2-0 in the A-10 Championship game on Sunday afternoon in Saint Louis, Missouri, to win their seventh A-10 title and clinch the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The field will be announced on Monday afternoon.

It will be URI’s 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in history.

URI Shuts Out George Mason

The Rams took the lead in the 15th minute when Chae Brangman was taken down inside the box to set up a penalty kick.

Kick taker Dominik Richter blasted a shot into the back of the net to put URI up 1-0.

The Rams put the game away in the 86th minute when Emil Jesman Sunde found the back of the net to put Rhode Island up 2-0. 

The goal was his first of the season.

Rams’ goaltender Roger Pensky made six saves to get the shutout.

The shutout was Rhode Island's ninth of the season, tying the most since the Rams had 13 in 1999.

Rhody also had nine clean sheets in 2014.

URI This Season 

Following Sunday's win, the Rams are now 15-4 on the season. 

Rhode Island has 15 wins for the fifth time in program history.

The Rams won 19 in 1995, 17 in 1999 and 2000, and 16 in 1996.
