New York Architect to Design New Performing Arts Center at Brown

The performing arts center will be at the heart of multiple arts facilities including the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Rites and Reason Theatre and the Stephen Robert Campus Center.
Brown University will work with New York City-based REX to design a new performing arts center on campus.

The building will be located on Brown’s College Hill campus in Providence, between Angell and Waterman streets on the west side of The Walk.

“We’re excited to work with architects with the stature and experience to bring life to our vision for a state-of-the-art home for the performing arts. This new center will build on Brown’s rich arts heritage, serve as a venue for both traditional and groundbreaking new works, and strengthen our connection to the greater community,” said Brown President Christina Paxson.

The architect and the site selection was approved in votes by the Corporation of Brown University at its annual Commencement week meeting.

Detailed planning for the new performing arts center is set to begin in Summer of 2017.

The Performing Arts Center

The vision for the new performing arts center includes a major performance hall and reconfigurable spaces that can hold both large-scale and smaller performances and projects.

The location puts the performing arts center in the middle of several arts facilities, including the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Rites and Reason Theatre and the Stephen Robert ’62 Campus Center.

The Walk also gives the opportunity to use the outdoor area for performances and accommodates traffic and loading concerns.

REX

Headed by Joshua Prince-Ramus, REX has received awards from the American Institute of Architects, the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology and the American Council of Engineering Companies.

“REX’s innovative and insightful approach to design discovers new paradigms for expressing the program in built form. The firm’s architects intensively explore the issue of fabrication in the making of architecture and bring fresh perspectives to the site context," said University Architect Collette Creppell.

The company has designed buildings such as the Wyly Theatre, the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the site of the World Trade Center and more.
