Brown University Math Institute Awarded Renewal of $17.5 Million Grant

Brown University's Institute for Computational and Experimental Research (ICERM) in Mathematics has been warded a $17.5 million grant renewal from the National Science Foundation. This funding will help support the operations at the institute for the next five years.

ICERM was launched in 2010 and is one of eight national mathematics institutes that is funded by the National Science Foundation and is the only one in New England.

“In its first five years, ICERM has established an international network of mathematicians with Providence as an important hub. The institute’s programs, which focus on the intersection of mathematics and computation, are creatively addressing a range of issues and technologies that will be important in the near term and more distant future," said Brown President Christina Paxson.

The institute supports semester-long research programs as well as week-long workshops and lectures by prominent scholars. The institute is also home to a group of visiting scholars in residence and postdoctoral researchers.

“ICERM is an international center that brings nearly one thousand unique visitors to Providence each year. Many of these visitors now have scientific connections to faculty and students here at Brown, making ICERM a terrific resource for Brown researchers," said Jill Pipher, ICERM's founding director.

With the renewal of the grant, ICERM will continue its current programs and also add new ones.
