Dr. Mercurio Named President of RI Veterinary Medical Association

The veterinarian has been named to lead the local, 250-member organization dedicated to animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and public health.

The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) has appointed Dr. Sarah Mercurio as its new president. RIVMA is a 250-member association comprised of local veterinarians dedicated to animal welfare and advancing veterinary medicine. Dr. Mercurio succeeds Dr. Joyce Gifford, who successfully completed her term at the end of 2024.

Dr. Mercurio assumes the presidency of RIVMA as demand for veterinary services remains challengingly high, and at a time marked by a shortage of veterinary professionals in the state and across the country.

“We have incredibly caring, dedicated, and talented veterinarians in our state, and I am both honored and humbled to serve in this role,” said Dr. Mercurio. “I am also deeply committed to elevating the essential role of veterinary technicians and to ensuring they are supported and set up to succeed in the work that they do.”

In the year ahead, Dr. Mercurio is eager to work alongside the RIVMA board to explore new opportunities for growth and collaboration, increase advocacy for the veterinarian profession, and bring more awareness to the organization’s role in advancing the art and science of veterinary medicine. She is also passionate about creating opportunities for the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Outside of RIVMA, Dr. Mercurio is the medical director of City Kitty Veterinary Care for Cats in Providence, where she has worked since 2009. She also serves as a site visitor for the American Veterinary Medical Association, and previously served on the AVMA Council on Education for six years.

Dr. Mercurio enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, and their cats, chickens, and bees.
