NEW: Providence's Custom House Tavern Set to Reopen

The Custom House Tavern, once a Providence staple, has new construction plans to have a new version of the establishment slated to open sometime again in the near future.

The Weybosset Street property is currently under construction, with the newly permitted project titled “Bar at Custom One House”, with plans detailing renovations to the lower level. Building and inspection file notes show bathrooms in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, partitions, kitchen equipment, millwork, and finishes are all part of the proposed construction.

Steven M. Nappa of Nappa Construction Management, Christine Malecki West of Kite Architects, and Libby Slader Interior Design are all working together in various capacities on the project. The property, which is valued at $643,100, has $170,000 invested in the construction. The permit itself cost $2,521.

It remains to be seen whether the Custom House Tavern name will remain or what type of food the restaurant and bar will serve, but a new iteration of the downtown staple should be back soon.

Editor's Note: A previous version had incorrectly stated that the Custom House had closed in 2012.
