Nurse Used “Excessive & Unnecessary Force in Attempt to Restrain Patient,” Says RIDOH

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) said that a registered nurse in the state used “excessive and unnecessary force in attempting to restrain a patient.” 

The finding came in a formal reprimand issued to Victor Derefaka on October 16.

RIDOH said that on November 24, 2020, that it received a complaint alleging patient abuse by Derefaka while working on November 12, 2020.

The state found that Derefaka “violated the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and the standard of nursing by using excessive and unnecessary force in attempting restrain [sic] a patient.”

“Should Respondent fail to comply with the laws and regulations governing the practice of nursing and/or daily to comply with the terms of the consent order, their license as a registered nurse may be subject to other appropriate disciplinary action,” wrote RIDOH in its reprimand.
