College Admissions: Which New England Grads Make 6 Figures?

As more attention from the federal government focuses on the value graduates are seeing from colleges, Payscale.com released its 2013-2014 report detailing starting and mid-career salaries for individual colleges. The data tells an interesting story here in New England.

Babson, All Business When It Comes To Earnings

As home to some of the finest education in the country, salaries are high from local colleges—but not necessarily where you would expect. Harvard and Yale, for instance, are outshined by tiny Babson which has an average starting salary of $59,700 and mid-career salary of $123,000 for graduates. This compares to Harvard’s average starting salary of $55,300 and Yale’s of $50,000. Fifteen years out of school Harvard grads average $119,000 and Yale grads $117,000. Not surprisingly, MIT grads (primarily science, technology and engineering majors) earn the highest right out of college, averaging $68,600, but by mid-career they settle in with the rest of the top schools at $118,000. Likewise, WPI grads top the starting salary averages at $62,100 but by mid-career hover around $107,000. Brown holds its own, coming in at $52,300 for recent grads and $119,000 for mid-career averages.

Liberal Arts Colleges Hold Value in 21st Century

For those parents questioning the value of liberal arts education, Williams, Middlebury and Amherst Colleges demonstrate they can still crank out grads earning top salaries. At Amherst, the average graduate is making $53,000 and Middlebury grads are making $51,900 (both surpassing Yale). Fifteen years out of college, William’s grads are the top liberal arts college earners from New England, averaging $111,000.

Big Price Tags, Big Payoffs?

Northeastern, BC and BU all had impressive starting salaries at $52,000, $50,200 and $48,000 respectively. However, by mid-career the shine wears off with averages of $87,700 for Northeastern, $95,100 for BC and $90,700 for BU.

The Invisible Heroes

Perhaps the biggest surprises here in New England included a strong showing for Mass Maritime with and average starting salary of $54,700 and a mid-career average of $102,000. And among the New England state universities, UMASS Lowell landed the top spot with an average starting salary of $50,000 and a mid-career salary of $95,100—making experts question the value of its high priced competitors down the road in Boston.
