The Rare Occasions
Groovy rock accented with a bit of pop, The Rare Occasions started things off with contagious rhythm and infectious energy. The synth on "Wickenden Kids" added a hidden dimension that had me hooked. "Scarlett Lies" had a little bit of doo-wop influenced lyrics with the synth adding a contemporary tinge, and "Miss Mary Mack" was a rocking version of a nursery rhyme that highlighted a great set. If you want to have you finger on the pulse when it comes to up and coming acts in New England, The Rare Occasions should be on your radar. Check out their EP Applefork and be amazed.
Archie Powell & The Exports
A rock & roll band with Archie Powell singing through both the usual microphone and a telephone, Chicago's Archie Powell & The Exports hit the stage and was purely brilliant. "Finding Words", "Scary Dream", "Crazy Pills" and "Only So Much You Can Do" were my favorite songs from a spectacular performance. Abundant with vigor and emphasis, this act from The Windy City electrified the room. Archie and his band of Exports always seem to grace Providence with their presence every time they go on tour. You better make sure to check them out the next time they roll through The Creative Capital.

Originally a straight up rock band who have been progressing gradually into the punk realm, Mean Creek were pumped up and ready to explode. Kicking it off with "Do You Know?", the radical rhythms were at the supreme precipice right from the start. They went all out insane with "I Can't Hide", "Cool Town", a rendition of The Descendents' "Silly Girl" and "Young And Wild" while there were imminent threats of UFO's in the sky. Other than preventing an alien invasion, there's a reason why Mean Creek is one of the top acts in Beantown right now. The reason is that they resonate so much angst and emotion; it's a real pleasure to watch then perform. Mean Creek will be putting out a new album titled Local Losers in January. It's my early front runner for best album of 2014 and I can't wait to listen to every track.
Ideas Into Action
These crazy punks from Italy capped off the night with an old-school style that merged the vintage sounds of The Ramones and The Stooges with a modern take that had them bouncing around all over the stage. There were a few instances where the guitarist struggled to sing lyrics in Italian, but then he got the hang of it in comedic fashion. The next one he sang completely in French which was impressive as well. Overall, Ideas Into Action was the cherry on top of a rock & roll sundae that was musically delicious.
