MUSIC: Remembering David Lamb of Brown Bird

David Lamb, who was the guitarist and singer for the folk duo Brown Bird
When cancer comes into your life in any form of the disease, it’s always a hard battle to fight. The chemotherapy, the hospital visits and the feeling of desperation as your life is clinging to every waking moment like a thin string on a telephone line can be heartbreaking and devastating. As a person who has had to watch their loved ones go into the struggle for their life and eventually fade away, the loss experienced by the friends and family of Brown Bird’s David Lamb when he passed on while being stricken with leukemia this past Saturday was heartbreaking. A golden soul, a talented individual and an inspirational human being left our world in an instant with a community reeling and mourning David’s transcendence to the great beyond. It was a little less than a year ago when I heard about David’s diagnosis and I felt compelled to write a plea on GoLocalProv for people in Rhode Island and all over the world to donate whatever they had to Brown Bird’s fundraiser page on youcaring.com to help cover David’s medical expenses.

I also got involved in the series of benefit shows for David that took place in Providence to raise funds to help him and his spouse/musical partner MorganEve Swain, which was one of my favorite moments of 2013 and is one of the many reasons why it was such a diamond year for the music scene in the Creative Capital. People came together to help out a good man who was experiencing the worst kinds of trials and tribulations. It was only a month after the initial benefits that there were sightings of David enjoying the nightlife in Rhode Island with MorganEve, I remember witnessing it first hand while at a Baroness show at The Met in Pawtucket last May. I’m sitting on a bench outside on the porch and then I see a shadowy figure dressed in black, seconds later I recognize MorganEve by his side and I immediately saw that gracious smile on David’s face. We hugged and talked, he was in the best of moods and being very optimistic about everything. At the time I said to myself, ”If there’s anyone who can beat this thing, my money is on David Lamb”.

Even a month and a 1/2 before his passing there were people talking about how David was in the best shape he’s been in months and how excited he was to start playing with Brown Bird again. Then two weeks ago, the worst of news came to light. The leukemia had relapsed and when cancer comes back, it comes back harder than ever. Like many people involved in the music and arts in Providence, I prayed for David to get through this once more and have a steady recovery so he could get back to doing what he loved the most. Writing beautiful music with his wife and performing in front of people was David’s passion, it shined through him every time he strummed that six string and stomped his foot on the kick drum. When I heard the news this past Saturday I was hoping it was just a cruel joke someone was playing and David was still winning the battle. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and the world lost one more good soul way to soon.
