MUSIC: Detroit's "Against The Grain" Rips Club Dusk Apart

When I hear about a band coming into town from Detroit, I automatically feel compelled to go. Maybe it's because of bands like The Stooges, MC5, The White Stripes & Electric Six, but high octane rock & roll was born in The Motor City. At Dusk in Providence this past Tuesday, speed rockers Against The Grain straight out of The Motor City headlined a night with Boston punks Dead Cats Dead Rats and The YaBeautifuls from Providence with the whole thing being put on by General Assembly. Yeah, it was a Tuesday, so you were acting like a crybaby about having work in the morning. Buddy, that's no excuse for a night like this. I've said it before, but if you weren't here you weren't anywhere.

With a new bass player, the lovable rock & roll trio from Providence were absolutely beautiful. Well, when you're name is The YaBeautifuls you have you live up to the billing. They killed it with "Sandra Dee You Dun Broke My Mind", "Over It" and "Croonin'" during a fantastic performance. I can't help but love these guys, it's garage rock with that youthful rebellious angst that has hooked you, your parents and your grandmother at least once. The YaBeautifuls rule, give them a listen on BandCamp and you'll love it.

I'll be honest, all of the great things I've heard about Dead Cats Dead Rats is from Vudu Sister's Keith McCurdy. For a man like himself to be of such great esteem about a band, I can't help but want to see this act live. They were loud, abrasive and simply amazing. If you love Nirvana, Soundgarden & Pearl Jam then Dead Cats Dead Rats are your cup of tea. This Beantown trio had everything I loved in a band: a devil may care attitude, blasting the speakers and having a whole lot of energy. I can see why Keith loves these guys, next time Dead Cats Dead Rats roll through Providence go get your mind blown.

Intense and emphatic, Against The Grain electrified the room with a perfect blend of fast rhythms mirroring Motorhead and a tinge of fuzzy sludge a la Black Sabbath. The volume coming from the stage was captivating on all ends of the spectrum, Against The Grain wanted to let everyone know at Dusk that they were here to melt brains and shock spines. It was a perfect end to a wonderful show, I definitely hope Against The Grain come around the New England area more often. Speaking of doing things more often, you should come to Dusk more often.
