5 Live Music Musts: January 10, 2014

Our “5 Live” spotlight this week is on the local Coffee House circuit. We highlight several area venues that provide folk music and beyond.

Jammin’ Divas

Start tonight with Riverfolk at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland as they present The Jammin’ Divas. Known for their three part harmonies, the folk quartet includes members from Ireland, Australia, Israel and the United States. Their blend of traditional and original folk properly highlights the diverse backgrounds of the singers. Tickets are $15 – show starts at 8PM.

Roz Raskin and the Rice Cakes

Tomorrow night, head to Music at Lilypads in Peacedale, for a show featuring local Indie sensation and former rock hunt winner’s Roz Raskin and the Rice Cakes. The upbeat earth tingling sounds of the Providence native and her band are difficult to categorize by genre, but we guarantee you’ll have a good time. Local roots rockers Vudu Sister open the evening. Tickets are $12 for the 8PM show.

John Gorka

Also tomorrow night, Common Fence Music in Portsmouth has acclaimed singer-songwriter John Gorka. The New Jersey native is a well respected veteran of the folk scene blending humor, great songwriting, and entertaining shows wherever he plays. Doors open at 7PM, show starts at 8PM; tickets are $25 in advance and $28 at the door. Massachusetts native Meg Hutchinson opens.

Boxcar Lillies

The legendary Stone Soup Coffeehouse, located in the St. Paul’s Church in Pawtucket has the Boxcar Lilies tomorrow night. Their recently released album Sugar Shack, is a country roots gem with great harmonies and a strong lyrical presence. The album is well worthy of the widespread attention it’s received. Paul Pasch opens at 8PM, tickets are $17 in advance, $18 at the door.

April Verch

Finally tomorrow night, head north to the Rose Garden Coffeehouse at The Congregational Church in Mansfield for the April Verch Band. Verch is a well regarded fiddler, step dancer and singer who has proven herself on the national and international stage. She even performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies. Boston area favorite Jake Armerding and his band, open at 8PM. Tickets are $22.
