MUSIC: Anvil Crushes Dive Bar

On a Monday, what better way to start your week then to see a legendary metal band? An act from our neighbors up north in Canada called Anvil, who you might know from that documentary that bears the same name, came through Dive Bar and ripped everything apart. Back in the 80s they shared the stage with the likes of AC/DC & Metallica and recently they've gained a cult following among metalheads of all shapes & sizes. It was an early show, so I missed most of the openers. My apologies to whoever played before I arrived, but be sure they are worthy of the opportunity. It was a Metallicious Monday at Dive Bar, my brain got shredded into pieces along with everyone else's.

Balam

When I walked into the door I got the chance to see a local sludge metal band that I've heard a lot about in Balam. They paid tribute to the metal gods of old with an epic sound that roared like a lion on top of Mt. Everest. It put everyone in the proper mood and it was purely magnificent. Balam has a new album coming out soon, if it's as good as they are live then I highly suggest keeping your eye out for its release.

Anvil

With a thunderous introduction that had the audience going wild, Anvil took the floor with a vengeance. Starting with "666", the energy exuding from the band was infectious. Headbanging and utter chaos ensued, Dive Bar became the 9th circle of hell and it was a music lover's paradise. Feverish rhythms bounced around my cranium when Anvil played "Winged Asssasin", the drumming from Robb Reiner was at an insane level of syncopation, I was simply astounded to see such brilliance. At one point Lips was yelling through the pickups on his guitar, then every inch of distortion screeched through the speakers during an electrifying solo that nearly made my ears bleed during "Mothra". Robb was back at it with excellent drumming during "Swing Thing", he was all over the place on the toms, cymbals & snares during a jazzy thrash instrumental that was absolutely impeccable. His ridiculous drum solo took things to another level, revving the experience up to a countless amount of notches. "Metal On Metal" had devil horns in the air and people chanting every lyric as if they were possessed for a perfect finale.

Usually you don't know what to expect from a trio of any genre but Anvil totally killed it on this night. For a band that started out nearly 40 years ago, these guys haven't let up at all. My only critique is that I wish the show didn't start at 6pm, I would have loved to see the other opening acts if it weren't for life getting in the way. But it's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes, even on a Monday. People in certain social circles consider Anvil to be one of the best bands that no one knows about. Well, at Dive Bar a bunch of music fanatics got to know all about Anvil up close and personal. If you still don't know who these guys are, then you know what to do. Buy every Anvil album and dive in, I promise you won't regret it.
