NEW: US News Names Best Colleges 2017—How Did RI’s Colleges Rank?
Brown's ranking is unchanged from last year's rankings.

Among National Liberal Arts Colleges, Williams College in Massachusetts took the top spot while Amherst came in second.
Providence College was ranked as the number one in the north among Regional Universities. PC ranked second in the category last year.
“In recent years, Providence College consistently has been ranked within the top five institutions in our category. Now, in our Centennial year, it is gratifying to see us reach the top spot in the rankings. I think it is a testament to the growth and maturity of our institution, to our excellent faculty and staff, and to the high quality student we have been able to attract and graduate,” said PC President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P.

Note as to categories: Schools in the National Universities category, such as Brown University and URI, offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and Ph.D. programs. These colleges also are committed to producing groundbreaking research. Liberal Arts Colleges are schools like Williams, which emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study. Regional Universities offer a full range of undergrad programs and some master's programs but few doctoral programs, and Regional Colleges focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts disciplines.
