The third oldest institution of higher learning in New England is also one of the most selective, with a 9.6% acceptance rate. Price tag? A cool $45,612.

#2 in RI: PC leaps up

Providence College jumped in the 2014 rankings to a #29 showing, up from #33 last year.

The highlights? A #10 best value ranking, and of course its notable basketball program, which included rising NBA star Marshon Brooks. Perhaps not quite as known is how sporty the student body is -- it landed at #4 spot for "Everyone Plans Intramural Sports."

#3 in RI: Bryant makes big jump

With at #48 ranking in 2013, Bryant moves up in the rankings in 2014 to the #39 spot. Part of the reason? The Smithfield, RI university got a nod for #2 up-and-coming universities in the north during the year. That's worth of high honors in the Ocean State.

#4 in RI: Roger Williams University

Bristol-based Roger Williams University, named for its Rhode Island co-founding namesake, slipped only slight from its #41 ranking to 2013 to #46 in 2014, but the school took top marks nationally for its food, earning an A grade.

#5 in RI: Johnson and Wales slips

Johnson and Wales University had a #33 appearance in 2013, but fell to #48 in New England in 2014. As one of four locations across the country, JWU Providence earned top grades however for food and nightlife.

#6 in RI: Salve Regina

The Newport university came in at #56 in the region, just shy of its #53 mark last year. All students are required to perform 10 hours of community service in their freshman year and are encouraged to volunteer throughout their college years. The school earned a B grade for facilities.

#7 in RI: URI

The University of Rhode Island, the state's major public university, claimed the #65 spot for 2013, up three spots from last year. US News and World report gave it a nod of #81 nationally.

#8 in RI: Rhode Island College

Rhode Island College is the oldest of the three public institutions of higher education that operate under the aegis of the Board of Governors for Higher Education in Rhode Island. It scored a #62 ranking in 2013, but fell to #71 for 2014.

(The Rhode Island School of Design, often named top art and design schools in the nation, was not ranked as it’s not included in the national lists that made up GoLocal’s Super Ranking.)
