Building School Community During Coronavirus: PCD’s Director of Student Life LIVE

Kelly Hutchinson, the Director of Student Life at Providence Country Day School for the Upper School, appeared on GoLocal LIVE where she talked about how the school is placing an emphasis on creating student and teacher bonds, as in-person learning continues into the fall.

“We’re lucky to be a small school — we’ve been able to leverage that fact to keep kids on campus and learning safely,” she said. “We’re following all the guidelines, following all the rules, students are wearing their masks — and we’re working really hard to keep them socially distanced.”

PCD has not had a reported case of COVID-19 among students or teachers to date.

Creating Normalcy — And Community

“The goal really in creating all these guidelines is to create some sense of normalcy for them, to give them a chance to experience being in school again and being together physically which obviously was a huge piece of what was missing in the spring,” said Hutchinson.

“The best part is seeing the kids in person,” she said. “Teaching on Zoom in March, April and May — there was definitely something lacking, [what was] happening in the hallway, the conversations that just flow being able to be around each other.”

“We’re building as much community as we can — now — and making sure those connections are strong and that rapport exists between students and teachers, so if and when we have to go back to that Zoom classroom, we feel like we have that solid foundation,” she said.
