Britt Trial Unveils How Mattiello Campaign Used Private Investigator to Track Opponent

Steve Frias was tracked by Pichette in the 2016 campaign
The political corruption case against Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello’s former campaign consultant Jeff Britt took a turn on Tuesday, when one of the state’s witnesses Victor Pichette testified how he worked as a private investigator to track Mattiello’s opponent Steve Frias.

Pichette, who has received immunity from the state, testified on the stand as to how he came to work with Britt -- and ultimately cut a check to failed GOP candidate Shawna Lawton's campaign that funded the mailer in support of Mattiello.

"Opposition research is a very important thing if you’re running for office," said Pichette. "[Britt] asked me if I’d do some work on Frias — some opposition research, a little surveillance work — that was it."

After Tuesday's hearing, Mattiello tried to distance himself from the testimony by Pichette saying that he was unaware of the activities.

"Mr. Pichette was retained by Jeff Britt. The Speaker learned after the fact the type of opposition research that was employed when a report was presented to him.  It was never requested by the Speaker.  Moreover, the Speaker has never engaged in this sort of activity prior to or after the 2016 campaign. It's simply how Jeff Britt operates," said Mattiello's campaign spokesperson Patti Doyle.

Mattiello has repeatedly denied knowledge of his campaign's activities since Britt was charged and the trial began.

Pichette's Inconsistencies

While Pichette said on Tuesday that he first met Britt in 2015, Britt's attorney, former U.S. Attorney Robert Corrente challenged many of Pichette's claims including when he and Britt first meet and began working together.

"You don’t remember sending Jeff Britt a contract in 2013 — and sending Jeff Britt hundreds of emails -- for your company Genesis?" said Corrente.
