Cianci Family Angered By Crimetown Profiting From Depiction of Cianci Image

Vincent “Buddy” Cianci's nephew Brad Turchetta, who chairs The Cianci Educational Foundation, is angered at Crimetown’s profiting and depiction of the former Mayor’s likeness being morphed to Ray Patriarca’s likeness on a new T-shirt.

Turchetta, who earlier in May presided over the Foundation’s awarding of more than $25,000 in scholarships and donations to students and leading non-profits, said the T-shirt was “tacky and cliche.”

The T-shirt offered for sale on the Crimetown website goes for $24.95.

Turchetta said he was disappointed, as he and the family have tried to be helpful to the group producing Crimetown, despite the frustration that the podcast only focused on the negative aspects of the former Mayor, and failed to highlight Cianci’s many accomplishments. “There was no mention of rebuilding the city, WaterFire, or restoring Federal Hill,” said Turchetta.

“I called them and asked them to take [the shirts] down. [Marc] Smerling said they would not produce any more,” said Turchetta. “The family feels terrible about the depiction on the shirts.”

In an interview, Smerling said, "T-shirts are not my department.”

“For me the T-shirt (Cianci and Patriarca) is the good and the bad or the bad and the bad, depending on perspective," said Smerling.

Cianci passed away in 2016.
“Are T-shirts news?” asked Smerling, who said “no comment” to further questions.

Crimetown has been a very successful podcast from Gimlet Media. The series has focused on Providence, Rhode Island, “where organized crime and corruption infected every aspect of public life. This is a story of alliances and betrayals, of heists and stings, of crooked cops and honest mobsters—a story where it’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys.”

The series has received glowing accolades and stinging criticisms. Some critics include Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, who has questioned if the series glorifies criminals and has stigmatized Providence.

Cianci Foundation

In early May, the Cianci Foundation made donations to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Trinity Re,  and Providence Public Library as well scholarship awards to seven students totaling $19,000.

Turchetta said that the family is focused on the legacy of Cianci and wants the entire Cianci story to be told. Cianci was Providence’s longest serving Mayor and a two-time felon.
