Don Roach: Buddy Cianci Will Never be Forgotten

I can’t believe Buddy has passed on. When I heard the news last week, that the longest serving mayor in Providence’s history had died, it was shocking. What’s been more shocking than the passing of the seventy-four year old former mayor of Providence have been the personal stories I’ve heard from a wide swath of people across the state.

Buddy Cianci, it seems, knew nearly every single Rhode Islander. Well, I actually never met Cianci so I suppose I count as the one guy whom he didn’t know personally but seriously, I wonder how many of you who are reading this met the former Mayor.

Whether you liked him or not, what I have found amazing while recounting stories with a number of Rhode Islanders is that Cianci knew politics and how to get things done.

I say this because most stories I heard centered around Cianci helping to get a job, attending a graduation, going to various social functions such as opening ceremonies, weddings, and the like creating personal connections with people constantly.

He was the ultimate schmoozer. I mean that as a compliment because Cianci understood what was important to people, he knew how to get things done (see: Providence Place Mall), and most importantly to some, he was not above using questionable methods to get things done.

There’s no question that people either loved or hated Buddy. I recall a 2002 taped interview with then-candidate David Cicilline where he talked about being the bringing changes to City Hall and “cleaning” up the administration. Whereas Cianci was rumored (and I use rumored to avoid any potential lawsuits) to run his administration, for lack of a better word, unethically Cicilline was going to provide a different voice.

Cicilline spent two terms in the Mayor’s office and what did he have to show for his reformist efforts? Leaving the city nearly bankrupt. And that’s the conundrum I have with thinking about Cianci’s legacy. Was he the most scrupulous person who has ever graced City Hall? Probably not. Would he win a truth-telling award? Not likely.

But he was able and demonstrated an uncanny ability to get things done for the City of Providence unlike subsequent men like Cicilline who tried to govern differently. And does anyone in the City of Provide look back on the Cicilline years with awe or talk about any of his exploits with a reverence that makes you wonder if what you lived through was real or just a dream?

Take a few moments to compose yourself because it’s laughable to compare the legacies of Cicilline and Cianci. I only attempt to do so to demonstrate that Cianci was a singular figure – a man who is unlike others before or after whose flaws were only eclipsed by his ability to move Providence forward.

And last week, that man some have called the Prince of Providence, passed away. We’ll never seen anyone like him again but he’ll continue to live on for the next few decades as thousands of Rhode Islanders recount their Buddy stories to any and all who will listen.
