Matt Fecteau: Honoring “Buddy” Cianci’s Legacy

Sadly, the two-time mayor of Providence, and Providence icon Vincent Albert "Buddy" Cianci, Jr. passed away. There are truly no words that can express what a staggering loss this is for Providence, and those that have come to know “Buddy” Cianci.

Cianci was the soul of Providence. Aided by his media prowess and his charisma, he was an enthralling figure that was ubiquitous on Federal Hill with the occasional Churchill in hand. Though he was the prince of Providence, most felt comfortable simply calling him “Buddy.”

Maybe it was his Italian charm or wit, but Cianci had a way about him; he treated everyone like family, and was respected by even his foes. He was the most animated political figure I had the humbling honor to call “friend.”

There may not yet be a statue of Cianci in downtown providence, but there are numerous monuments to his enduring legacy such as the Providence Place Mall, and the ice-skating rink. These are all evanescence reminders of his impact on Providence, if we don’t remember his important contributions.

Like all people, Cianci wasn’t perfect.  As mayor of Providence, he disappointed many of us with his scandals. His two- time felony convictions while a sitting mayor will be a lull in his otherwise lavish, prestigious career. Nevertheless, he never let that hold him back. He fought on.

Unlike other tarnished political figures, Cianci became more vivacious than ever. On his radio show, Cianci’s bombastic, blunt, witty retorts and jabs often angered some – those that weren’t laughing hysterically.  Even after suffering a heartbreaking loss when he ran for Mayor the third time, the following day, he went right back on the WPRO airways lambasting the political establishment each day.

Cianci was at times eloquent, yet gave us all the straight scope; something we all desperately needed especially in a state like Rhode Island with a glut of political fakes, and frauds. He became the bane of the political elite; our imperfect loud voice willing to speak for the disenfranchised constituents too often ignored.

As we reflect on Cianci’s life, it is important to keep his legacy alive as we remember such a great man. I looked up to and respected Cianci. He was someone whom I rarely agreed with, but gave everyone a chance, including young, upstart politicians such as yours truly.

I am upset for such a loss, but even more upset Cianci didn’t pass the torch.  Who will be the next generation’s Cianci? Who will take up his charismatic mantle willing to take on the political establishment?  These questions need to be answered to honor Cianci’s legacy moving forward, and they will be.

Rhode Island lost someone willing to stick it to Rhode Island political elites, not caring who he offends in the process, a fly in the ointment of the corrupt, Rhode Island political machine. That is a larger and more important part of Cianci’s legacy that we should honor.

Let the shadow of Cianci loom far and wide, and to the politicians breathing easier because of Cianci’s passing, don’t count your blessings just yet.

Matt Fecteau ([email protected]), of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, lost to U.S. Rep. David Cicilline in 2014’s Democratic primary. He is a former White House national security intern and Iraq war veteran.
