Davey Lopes Pool Supporters Declare Victory with Reopening

Councilman Davian Sanchez and kids await the official ribbon cutting on Monday.
After being closed during the summer of 2013 to political controversy and public outcry, the Davey Lopes pool reopened on Monday, June 30.

Over one hundred kids, parents, community leaders, elected officials, and political candidates turned out to celebrate the official start of summer.

City Councilman Davian Sanchez, community activist Leah Williams Metts, General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Chief of Police Hugh Clements, City Council President Michael Solomon, and City Council members Luis Aponte, Michael Correia, Kevin Jackson, Sabina Matos, and Nick Narducci were among those who welcomed the crowd, and helped cut the ribbon to open the pool to swimmers.

"This is power of what can happen with the community comes together," said Raimondo, who jumped in the pool along with Council members and supporters.  "Everyone deserves the same opportunities, regardless of zip code."

The event was attended by candidates for political office, including gubernatorial candidate Ken Block, Mayoral hopefuls Jorge Elorza and Brett Smiley, candiates for General Treasurer Frank Caprio and Seth Magazine, as well as local office seekers.

"If we can't do things that protect our children, that's not a government," said City Councilman Aponte.  "This neighborhood said "not here."

City of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras was not present.  Gonzalo Cuervo represented City Hall at the event.

"This is the Eiffel Tower of our community," said NAACP President Jim Vincent.  "Mess with this, and you're in trouble."
