East Providence Paralyzed: Afternoon Pre-K Canceled, Schools Let Out Early

The impact of the westbound lane closures on the Washington Bridge -- and the diversion of traffic into East Providence -- has forced city officials to let schools out early and afternoon Pre-K being canceled on Tuesday. 

"We are looking at gridlock in the city," said East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva in a live video at Waterman Avenue, of the traffic caused by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation diverting drivers over the Henderson Bridge. 

DaSilva announced the following on Tuesday morning.

"In order to get elementary students home as close to on time as possible, we will begin dismissal of East Providence High School at 12:45 pm today.  

Middle school dismissal is projected for 2:00 pm. We are preparing to dismiss Elementary students on time, at approximately 3:00 pm. If your child is an elementary bus student and you plan to pick up,  please notify the school.  There may still be additional delays in some areas. 

Afternoon Pre K classes have been canceled due to the excessive travel time."
