On Friday, the demolition of the Washington Bridge suffered a significant incident, according to witnesses tied to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) project.

According to witnesses, video, and photos, the contractor demolishing the bridge lost control of major pieces of the bridge, and debris fell, sinking one of the barges.

Another barge is heavily listing.

No workers were reported injured in the incident. A broken safety railing can be seen at the end of the video thrown on top of the debris.

The Washington Bridge westbound was closed in December of 2023 due to structural issues.

It is unclear if the incident has been reported to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Aetna Bridge is the contractor who was awarded nearly $100 million in contracts by RIDOT to demolish the failed westbound Washington Bridge.

J.R. Vinagro is the subcontractor to Aetna for the demolition.

As GoLocal reported, the politically connected construction firm has distributed tens of thousands in campaign contributions.

Aetna is also one of the contractors being sued by the State of Rhode Island. The state's lawyers claim Aetna and 12 other construction entities contributed to the failure of the bridge.

In October of 2024, GoLocal reported Aetna Bridge, the company that was given the contract for the demolition of the Washington Bridge in June despite being the high bidder, has scored a no-bid change order for tens of millions of dollars more.

At that time, RIDOT signed a change order with Aetna Bridge for $38,410,000. It was a "no-bid" award.

Between the original demolition contract award to Aetna in June for $45,777,000.

Combined, Aetna has now been awarded $84,187,000.

The demolition of the bridge was budgeted for $40 million by RIDOT.

GoLocal unveiled in August how Aetna was awarded three major RIDOT contracts despite being the high bidder.

On Saturday, GoLocal reached out to Aetna's spokesperson, who did not respond to questions.
