Former State Rep Mel Benson Passes Away at 86

Melvoid Benson, one of the first black women to be elected to the Rhode Island General Assembly, has passed away.

The North Kingston United Methodist Church posted the news, and announced a memorial for Benson on June 25.

Benson was a Rhode Island State Representative during the 1990s and was one of tthe first black women to be elected to General Assembly. She taught in several North Kingstown schools and served as a member of the North Kingstown School Committee.

Congressman Jim Langevin Tweeted on Monday the following, after President Obama signed into law on Monday the bill introduced by Langevin designating the United States Postal Office located at 7715 Post Road, North Kingstown, Rhode Island, as the "Melvoid J. Benson Post Office Building". 

"It's official. The Melvoid J. Benson Post Office bill has been signed into law. I wish Mel were here to see this," Langevin Tweeted.
