Guest MINDSETTER™ Tattrie: Smiley's Trump Diatribe Has Consequences

It goes without saying that there was a time when people holding positions such as Brett Smiley were historically prohibited from making comments, because depending on how the election played out, it could affect future collaboration between the State and the White House. As we all know, and have come to learn, politics has turned into a very terrible game.

Without someone somewhere grasping at some form of civility, things like what Brett Smiley did here contribute nothing but the continuing "dumbing down" of America. I'm not a fan of either candidate, but Mr. Smiley is demonstrating just how bad the disease has spread throughout the country. It's apparently an epidemic here in Rhode Island.

Ask any old time politician about speaking out of turn and the consequences that go along with it and they'll all give you a similar answer -- "be careful."

Brett Smiley has found himself in the middle of what we have all fallen into, the craziness of the Presidential election. When listening to either candidate it's extremely difficult to navigate through the nonsense and find anything of substance to absorb

With the election turning into a virtual soap-opera of sorts, I find myself swaying as to the lesser of two evils. Brett Smiley on the other hand has decided that he isn't able to contain his emotions towards one candidate. I don't know much about Twitter or how it works, but I can only assume it's like every other social media outlet and sooner or later the person you comment about gets to see what's being said. Bad or good someone is digesting it.

As someone whom has been involved in politics, I've seen many things, but never a Chief of Staff blurt out something of this nature. Back in the day it was unheard of for any staff members to vocalize on a topic as to not detract from their "bosses" thoughts or wishes. Many a Governor has stepped on their own toes by saying something out of turn and then after election time found themselves on the "short end of the stick" as we say in the political ring.

In the event Mr. Trump makes it to the White House, it's safe to say Mr. Smiley may have sealed the fate of our little State by his silly comment. Perhaps we should journey back about 10 years when you let the public make the comments and the politicians absorbed the responses, this way you don't make mistakes like Mr. Smiley.

Like Trump or not, his action was out of place and the people in charge need to act like they're in charge. The dumbing down of America needs to stop and Mr. Smiley is just fueling the ever growing problem.
