The Incident

According to police, on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at approximately 7:00 a.m. the Cranston Police Department received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a field in the area of 500 Laten Knight Road.

The caller stated the two occupants appeared to be unconscious.

Officers responded to the area and located a silver Nissan sedan with Connecticut license plates parked in the location described. Two officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the two occupants. While the officers were investigating, the female driver suddenly drove off, running over one of the officer’s foot.

The second officer pursued the vehicle onto Hope Road into the towns of Scituate, Coventry, West Warwick, and then East Greenwich. When the pursuit entered South County Trail (Route 2) from Middle Road, the Cranston Police Officer and East Greenwich Police Officer terminated the pursuit due to traffic congestion and an increase in speed. As the officers continued South on Route 2, they observed the suspect vehicle had crashed into another vehicle as it turned West onto Frenchtown Road.

The officers were able to quickly apprehend the female driver, identified as Patricia Chivers, age 33, of 168 Underwood Avenue, Warwick, Rhode Island.

According to police, the male fled into the woods adjacent to Frenchtown Road with officers from East Greenwich and State Police in pursuit.

A short time later, officers apprehended the male passenger at a nearby Dunkin Donuts.

He was identified as Matthew Chivers, age 29, also of 168 Underwood Avenue, Warwick, Rhode Island.
