Two people have been arrested for allegedly attempting to ship guns from Rhode Island to the Dominican Republic — in coffee canisters.

Law enforcement authorities on Friday announced the arrests of two individuals they say were involved in the scheme, and are now facing over thirty felony charges.

Amado Diverge, age 36, was charged with 24 felony offenses and Alba Moronta-De Espinal, age 31, was charged with nine felony offenses.

According to police, handguns, rifles, dismantled shotguns, and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found in coffee containers — covered in corn kernels — in black plastic shipping barrels at a residence on Clarence Street.

Diverge was arrested on Wednesday; De Espinal on Thursday.

Providence Police made the arrests following an investigation involving the Massachusetts State Police, Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
