Providence Police on Wednesday placed a man in custody following an armed standoff with police.

About Incident

Police were called to Ledge Street -- off of Charles Street -- shortly after 3 PM on Wednesday for a report of a man with a gun.

Family members told police a thirty-year-old man -- Eliot Britto-- was inside the residence with a gun, and that he had been drinking.

They also told police he had been suicidal in the past.

Police shut down surrounding roads and set up a perimeter and tried to talk Britto out of the house.

Britto came outside several times with both a knife and a rifle, at one point pointing it at officers.

At approximately 5:30 PM, police were able to detain Britto and transport him to Rhode Island Hospital.

Police then seized guns and knives from inside the residence.

Britto now faces weapons and assault charges.
