The Providence Board of Licenses voted Wednesday to permanently close Federal HIll’s Club Seven, following the stabbing and beating death of Stephen Cabral.

Club lawyer Nick Hemond is now appealing for a stay, which will be taken up by the Department of Business Regulations (DBR) on Thursday morning, in order to reopen the club.

"In this case, it took [the Board of Licenses] 20 minutes to read the decision. They said we know there's nothing connecting what happened at the parking lot [death] with what happened inside the club," said Hemond. "They admitted they didn't have it. They even read the law that says they need [the connection]."

"There's a kid that's dead - and the people that killed him should be punished," said Hemond. "What they're saying is if they hadn't had bottle service and loud music that would not have happened. There's no legal precedent -- they didn't have the case to put the murder on the club. That [murder] case belongs in Superior Court, and I hope they're successful in their prosecution."

"But the Board of Licenses realized they didn't have that case -- so they brought in bottle service and entertainment [violations]. Maybe they thought they were being clever that bottle service and entertainment led to murder. No, crazy behavior led to murder," said Hemond. "My client has been told not to have entertainment without a license. They've been caught once with having a DJ. They're certainly not the only club that does bottle service. They've been closed 30 days now -- that's more than enough of a sanction."

Closing Club Seven

The closure of Club Seven comes several weeks after  Cabral was murdered on Federal Hill following an altercation that started inside the club.
