NEW: Providence Pool Water Samples Came Back "Acceptable"

Test samples from Providence pools as part of the Department of Health's annual inspection on August 12 came back as "acceptable," according to DOH on Monday.

"The analytical results were acceptable," DOH's Christina Batastini wrote in an email statement on Monday.

Last week, GoLocalProv was first to report that the city's public pools were closed down due to water quality and safety concerns.

"I think there is a lot to be said, especially with pools, about using an an abundance of caution. If the lifeguard can't see the bottom, that's an issue," said City Council President Luis Aponte.

"However, from that point forward, I don't know what the issue is with reopening [the pools]. How come it couldn't be remediated?  I was on board with the decision for the closing.  The issue is, how could we resolve these issues quickly and get the pools open," said Aponte.

Inspection - and Closure

The Davey Lopes pool - and all the city's public pools - were closed down abruptly last week.
Last Wednesday, DOH had explained its role in inspecting the pools.

"The inspection on August 12 was part of RI DOH’s annual inspections. During this inspection, the pool water was cloudy.   Samples of the water were taken.  As a result of the pool cloudiness, the pool was voluntarily closed until sample analysis could be returned," wrote DOH on August 19.

The city noted on August 19 that it had closed the pool on the basis of the cloudy water and subsequent visibility issues.

"City pools have been closed due to a buildup of calcium scale that was first observed following heavy rains last week. Over time, calcium scale can make water appear cloudy and impede visibility."
