UPDATED: Woman in Critical Condition Following Car Crash on Ocean Drive in Newport

According to police, shortly before 1 AM, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Ocean Drive at Hazard Road for the report of "screeching tires and a loud crash."
When officers arrived at the scene, they said found a Toyota Corolla against a tree with "heavy front-end damage and both airbags deployed."

Victims Hospitalized
Police said the passenger of the vehicle, a 39-year old male from Taunton, Massachusetts, was outside of the vehicle.
The operator of the vehicle, a 29-year old female from Fall River, Massachusetts was unconscious and trapped inside of the vehicle, according to police
Both the operator and passenger were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Newport and Middletown Fire Departments responded to the scene and extricated the operator from the vehicle. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries to her legs and pelvic bone and remains unconscious and in critical condition.
The passenger was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital for upper body injuries and is in stable condition.
Police say the accident remains under investigation.
