ICE Makes Apprehension in Newport, First Reported RI Raid Under Trump’s New Policy

President Donald Trump’s arrest strategy related to immigrants has hit Rhode Island. 

 

Newport Police issued a statement on Wednesday night that a raid took place in the city.

This was the first ICE action in Rhode Island since Trump issued his executive order.

 

“In response to multiple media and community inquiries, the Newport Police Department confirmed with federal authorities that a single targeted immigration enforcement action occurred in Newport today, Wednesday, January 29th, 2025,” said Newport Police in a statement.

 

“It took place on Thames Street in the area of Cottons Court with the apprehension of a single individual in connection to other criminal offenses. There were no other immigration-related law enforcement activities by federal authorities today in Newport,” added Newport Police.
