It is difficult to understand the policies of Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza as they relate to immigrants and emigrants.
“Providence is a welcoming, inclusive city that values the presence and contributions of folks from across the world,” Elorza had once said in a statement directed against Federal immigration policies. “We are a stronger, more vibrant city when every resident feels safe and supported.”
Elorza has made numerous pronouncements since the election of President Donald Trump. Chest thumping pronouncements.
This week, Elorza — along with two other Mayors in Rhode Island — announced that he opposed the policy of New York City that was offering transportation and a year's living expenses to families who are homeless to move to other parts of the country. Three New York City families moved to Providence according to a story the New York Post.
“It is deeply concerning that the City of New York is relocating members of their community to ours and many others without informing us. To send these families to other cities and towns with no communication or support structure is irresponsible,” pronounced Elorza.
Wait, everyone is welcome in Providence, except people from New York?
No, everyone is welcome in Providence from anywhere, except the homeless?
Stop, our new policy is you can come from anywhere in the world with documents or without documents except if you are a homeless Mets fan.
Or a Knicks fan — we don’t want Jets fans.
Mayor Elorza’s pronouncements seem confusing and contradictory, but in fact, they are all remarkably consistent — they are all reactive, political and pandering.
