PawSox Full Steam Ahead On New Stadium This Session

Pawtucket Red Sox Vice Chairman Mike Tamburro told GoLocal on Wednesday that he expects a proposal this legislative session from the current team ownership for a new, publicly-owned ballpark.

Tamburro's remarks came during his interview with GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE, following PawSox President Dr. Charles Steinberg's appearance on the show on Friday -- and current Chairman Larry Lucchino's remarks on Monday that the ownership of the Boston Red Sox AAA affiliate is looking to build a new, "public" park.

"A public park means publicly owned -- it also means that this ownership group is prepared to make a serious investment in the park," said Tamburro, who had previously served as President of the PawSox organization. "Last time around, Mr. Skeffington was asking for public money for a private park. This will be the city or state's park, so that's a major change and I think a good change for the city or state or combination of both."

Tamburro spoke to the recent feasibility study showing the costs to rehab - or tear down and rebuild - McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.

"McCoy's 75 years old. It's done its job. The industry has changed. To invest the type of money the [recent] study said is required on a 75 year old building just doesn't make sense," said Tamburro of the team's current facility.

Time Frame

Tamburro indicated Tuesday he expects the process to move quickly.

"It's time we find a way and come together publicly and privately to make this happen with serious investment from the private side," said Tamburro. "The state needs it, the state doesn't want to lose this club."

When asked about time frame, Tamburro offered the following prediction, for a site to be named -- and an ask made -- for a new ballpark in Pawtucket.

"I think in the next month or so you'll be hearing from us often," said Tamburro. "It's never easy bringing three entities together, on a project that's acceptable to the public. We have to have a solid plan that works for everybody that the public can accept and does the most good."

"I think this legislative session you want to have some kind of answer," said Tamburro. "The pressure is on all of us to meet the standards the public can be happy with, and deliver something we all can be proud of."
