A house explosion occurred on Block Island late Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred on the north end of the island, on West Beach Road.

Multiple neighbors described the house collapse as an "explosion."

 

The Block Island Fire Chief issued the following statement:

On Saturday, June 14 at 4:44 pm, BIVFRD received a report of a large house explosion at 719 West Beach Road. Firefighters and police were on scene 3 minutes later. Five people were in the house and three were trapped. It took 45 minutes to free them. One person suffered a broken femur, another had 2nd degree burns. Both were transported by the Coast Guard to Rhode Island Hospital. Firefighters extinguished two small fires. There were no injuries to first responders. The Rhode Island Fire Marshal's office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

 

The home was demolished on Sunday.
