PHOTOS: “Total Loss” - Sailboat Runs Aground Off Block Island

A sailboat ran aground off Block Island on Saturday morning - and all involved are reportedly safe. 

The New Shoreham Harbors Department is urging people to stay away from the scene. 

According to the Department:

In the early [hours] of this morning, a 32’ sailboat went aground just below the SE lighthouse. 

Although a total loss, the two individuals were able to get off safely with their dinghy to the USCG who was there to assist.  No injuries. 

DO NOT CLIMB OVER THE FENCE TO GET PHOTOS OR LOOK AT IT. 

It is right below a very unstable section of the bluffs and you will create another incident if the BIFRD needs to deploy the rope rescue. The vessel will be salvaged in safer conditions.

In case of a marine emergency, hail USCG on VHF CH 16 or the New Shoreham Harbors Department on VHF CH 12.
