Just over the Rhode Island line in Blackstone, MA, fire departments from three communities responded to a crash that launched a car into a tree on Sunday night. When emergency teams arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle on top of another, unoccupied vehicle that was parked near the street.

Chief Kevin Roy reports that the Blackstone Fire Department successfully extricated a driver after a serious crash on Main Street.

 

Crews found the crashed vehicle, a Honda CR-V, had landed on top of an unoccupied Jeep Grand Cherokee parked in a nearby driveway. First responders also quickly determined they would need additional help stabilizing the vehicle and extricating its driver, the lone occupant.

 

The Woonsocket Fire Department sent both ladder and engine companies to assist at the scene.

 

Firefighters requested a medical helicopter due to the extent of the driver's injuries. The North Smithfield Fire Department helped to establish a landing zone at Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School.

 

“The extrication took longer than we expected because the victim’s car was on top of another vehicle,” Chief Roy said. “We required additional help to stabilize the vehicle prior to extricating the patient.”

 

After about 25 minutes, rescue crews successfully freed the driver, a 63-year-old North Providence man, from the wreckage. He was transported by Blackstone EMS to the landing zone and then flown to an area hospital.

 

“We’d like to thank the Woonsocket and North Smithfield Fire Departments for their fast response and help at the scene and the Life Flight landing zone,” Chief Roy said. “Effective mutual aid in response to serious crashes like this can mean the difference between life and death.”
