Providence Equity’s Salem May Join PawSox Ownership

Paul Salem
Paul Salem, a titan of Wall Street and a senior managing director of the $50 billion Providence Equity Partners, is poised to join the ownership group of the Pawtucket Red Sox, GoLocal has learned. If Salem joins the ownership group the investment is personal and not an investment of Providence Equity, according to a spokesperson for Salem.

The existing owners of the PawSox are a who’s-who of corporate America - men who have run some of the biggest companies in America and are collectively worth billions.

In 2015 they asked for more than $120 million in public subsidies from Rhode Island in an ill-fated effort to move the team to Providence.

Now, the ownership group is back and is presently negotiating with the State for as much as $75 million is subsidies.  Salem attended a private meeting between Larry Lucchino and Governor Gina Raimondo on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Salem told GoLocal Thursday night, “[Paul] loves the PawSox and called the Governor and Larry to ask how he could help. He would like this crown jewel to stay in Pawtucket and is exploring a potential personal investment that would benefit the community and lessen the burden on taxpayers.”

When asked what was discussed at the meeting, Raimondo’s spokesman David Ortiz said, “The Governor thinks it would be nice to keep the PawSox in Pawtucket and applauds the city for taking the lead in that effort. She is committed to ensuring that any involvement of the state is a fair deal for Rhode Island's taxpayers.”

The Governor’s office said that she does not favor a mammoth state subsidy to the privately owned team. “The Governor believes any potential agreement needs to be revenue neutral for the state. She didn't support the previous proposal and will only support a new one that is a fair deal for taxpayers,” said Ortiz.

Paul Salem’s Success in Media and Sports

Salem’s addition to the ownership group that includes a group that collectively has a net-worth in the range of $8 to $10 billion. Salem may be the wealthiest of the group. Providence Equity Partners — the mega firm  — has been involved with deals like Hulu, YES Network, Auto Trader and numerous others billion transactions in sports and media.

The addition of Salem changes the equation and adds a lot more economic firepower to the group. Salem’s partner Jonathan Nelson annually makes Forbes billionaire list and is reported to be Rhode Island’s richest resident.

Salem’s wife Navyn is the founder of Edesia — the RI-based non-profit organization that manufactures specialized ready-to-use foods (RUFs) that has helped to feed 4 million globally.  She was GoLocal’s 2016 “Woman of the Year.”

Who Owns the PawSox

The ownership group — now comprised of nine (after the death of Jim Skeffington) has only one Rhode Island resident, Habib Gorgi of Nautic Partners. Rhode Island’s Retirement Commission has invested a three different Nautic Partners’ funds totaling $60 million. The state's investment in Nautic Partners has performed well. The state's retirement system has investments in Providence Equity as well.

Other than Gorgi, all the other PawSox owners are out-of-state residents. Former Fleet CEO Terry Murray was a Rhode Island resident for many years, as was former CVS CEO Tom Ryan.

The others in the PawSox ownership group include Ben Cammarata, founder of retailer T.J. Maxx; Bill Egan of Alta Communications; Arthur Nicholas who is a part owner in the Red Sox and is a top West Coast finance guy; Frank Resnek of Churchill Forge Properties in Newton, MA; and Lucchino who is the former president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox; and Fenway Sports Management (subsidiary of John Henry’s sports management group).
