Providence Police Make Arrest in Fatal New Year’s Eve Hit-and-Run

Providence police have made an arrest in the fatal hit-and-run that occurred in the city on New Year’s Eve. 

Ariel Acosta, age 31, was arrested on Saturday and held for the next session of District Court.

A vehicle of interest has been recovered and towed, according to police.

About Incident 

Police had responded to the intersection of North Main Street and Rochambeau Avenue shortly before 8 PM on December 31, 2023 for a report of a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. 

The victim, Edwin English, age 57, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. 

He later succumbed to his injuries on January 9, 2024.
