Providence’s South Street Landing is being honored with the 2019 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

South Street Landing was named a Most Endangered Property by the Providence Preservation Society in 2011 and 2012.

"South Street Landing tells the story of Rhode Island--where we've been, and where we're going. I’m thrilled that the National Trust for Historic Preservation recognizes its significance to our state as a testament to our comeback,” said Governor Gina Raimondo.

About the Building

The complex was built by Narragansett Electric Lighting Company, formed in 1884 by Marsden J. Perry and other Providence businessmen.

The company’s first customer was a skating rink on Aborn Street.

That same year the firm received a contract to produce electricity for 75 arc lamps in downtown Providence. South Street Landing is housed in a building that was built for large turbines from 1913 to 1925.

In 2006, the complex was slated to be redeveloped as the Heritage Harbor Museum, but the project stalled in the following years.

In 2014, Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island broke ground on a project to adapt the property as a state-of-the-art nursing education center (RIC and URI) and administrative space (Brown).

“South Street Landing embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit thriving in Rhode Island today. As home to the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, South Street Landing provides the most cutting-edge educational facilities that will distinguish Rhode Island nurses internationally,” said David M. Dooley, president of the University of Rhode Island.

The project was developed and completed by CV Properties, opening in late 2017 with its current moniker: South Street Landing.
