Rhode Island continues to be ranked as one of the states with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita. According to Covid ActNow, Rhode Island now ranks 6th, down from last week’s number one ranking.
The data is more sobering news for Rhode Islanders and is a stark reminder of the dangers of gatherings during Christmas.
Many of the state's hospitalizations are directly tied to Thanksgiving, according to Lifespan's Dr. Megan Ranney, who made the link during an appearance on CNN.
Testing as reported by the Department of Health -- per Governor Gina Raimondo's recent urging for asymptomatic people to get checked -- was up. Over 17,000 were tested and 879 positive cases were reported.
Warning for Christmas
Dr. Michael Fine, the former Rhode Island Director of Health, warned residents on Wednesday to stay out of stores and restaurants for last-minute shopping and to stay at home for Christmas.
Fine strongly encouraged Rhode Islanders to support local restaurants with takeout and curbside pickup. He also encouraged people, if shopping at local retailers, to ask for curbside pick up.
Across the country, there were 3,359 deaths and there are approximately 120,000 hospitalized -- a national record.
