Rhode Island Needs a Return to Wisdom: Guest MINDSETTER™ Deckman

A commitment to stewardship, eldership and partnership are three essential components a culture’s leaders must possess if the tribe is going to survive, let alone prosper.

It is no surprise to anyone paying attention to our state that we all, democrat, republican, independent, libertarian, progressive, young and old, are in serious financial trouble. Virtually every community is facing serious budget shortfalls…and they’re getting worse. Virtually every public pension plan is severely underfunded...and they’re getting worse. And virtually every citizen and small business is overtaxed and underserviced and it’s getting worse.

While periodically we may experience a positive economic blip no one living in reality truly believes our state’s finances are going to do anything other than get worse over the next decade and beyond. That is unless we pull from our past to create our future.

The Cause of the Problem

While it is true the major reasons our state is in a financial death spiral is because for decades we have elected and tolerated political “leaders” who are either self-serving, incompetent, and short-sighted or all three at once, those are secondary factors.

The primary cause of our decades-long economic, political and cultural decline is due to our electing too many men and women, Republicans, and Democrats alike, to high positions of power who lack WISDOM. We have gotten away from the basic requirement that every successful tribal culture demanded of its leaders since the dawn of mankind. And we are paying for it – literally.

True leadership is a state of consciousness and true leaders possess very high amounts of that consciousness. Position, power, and popularity do not make a leader. In fact, to the weak of character, those are merely aphrodisiacs which fuel the primal desires for more positions, power, and popularity for one’s self and friends as opposed to ensuring the long-term prosperity for the entire tribe.

A true leadership consciousness is comprised of several key components. Stewardship, eldership and a commitment to a partnership are three of them. Authenticity, integrity, and respect for all are as well. But the most important component of leadership and the most important attribute for leaders to possess is WISDOM. Because WISDOM is the birth mother of the other six.

Imagine if instead of the decades of the types of “leaders” we have accepted, we had consistently elected people who were dedicated stewards of our proud history and our future prosperity. People who saw their role as an awesome responsibility as opposed to an awesome personal opportunity.

Imagine where we would be if our elected officials acted as wise elders who understood the meaning of service, humility and the fair treatment of all, regardless of their party affiliation, gender or ethnicity.

Imagine if we had decades of true leaders who worked to craft and manifest partnerships between diverse factors of our culture to utilize our collective genius and energies to promote our collective well being of instead of giving favor to just their friends, donors and families.

Finally, imagine if we had decades of Governors, Speakers, Senate Presidents, Atty Generals, General Treasurers and other officials who consistently led with authenticity, integrity and respect for every member of the Rhode Island tribe - leaders who would circle the wagons around us instead of against us.

If we insisted that the only people who would get our votes were people who possessed the WISDOM of stewards and elders we all would be living in a state that would be the envy of the country instead of the butt of many jokes.

I believe in Rhode Islanders and I believe we can save our state. But not by foolishly voting for people who value narcissism and power over stewardship, eldership and partnerships. We must be the WISDOM we want to see in the world.

In the words of John Lennon: “You may call me a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.” The entire world is beginning to reject narcissistic politicians who seek to divide us so they can use our votes and tax dollars to keep themselves in power and keep us powerless.

Demand more from your leaders. Demand for WISDOM. It is the only way we get out of the mess we voted ourselves into. Be WISE. Vote WISE.
