Rhode Island has ranked as the third worst state in the nation for online college students.

This ranking is according to a study conducted by the website Online College Students.

The study calculated the rankings based on several factors. These factors included educational opportunity and cost, post-graduation earning, and employment potential.

Education and Earnings Quality

"Education and Earnings Quality", a proprietary metric, was driven by several ranking data points, including the following:

-Internet Quality, based on data from Ookla

-In-state tuition rates, based on data from The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)

-Distance education programs, based on data from IPEDS

-Industry growth for 2008 - 2018, 2010-2020, and 2012 - 2022, based on data from state departments of labor S

-State job growth, based on data from Arizona State University

-Median salary for Bachelor's degree holders, 2013, based on data from the US Census Bureau

Online Colleges stated,"Rhode Island ranks as the third worst state for online college students due to a double-edged sword of limited distance education and stagnant employment opportunities. The state ranks last for affordability and next to last for availability of distance education programs. Coupled with annual earnings for college graduates that rank near the bottom third nationally, Rhode Island does not have enough going for it when it comes to online education."
