RI Doctor Sanctioned for Performing Laser Surgery on the Wrong Eye

A Rhode Island doctor has been fined and reprimanded for performing laser eye surgery on the wrong eye of a patient, according to Rhode Island Department of Health documents reviewed by GoLocal.
"Charles C. Calenda, MD ("Respondent") has been licensed to practice medicine in the State of Rhode Island since August 8, 1982. On June 28, 2024, a complaint was filed by a patient against [Calenda] alleging that [Calenda] performed a laser procedure on the patient's wrong eye," according to RIDOH.
An Investigative Committee of the Board reviewed the medical records relating to the patient. "Respondent also appeared before the Investigative Committee on May 7, 2025, said RIDOH.

Reprimand
Calenda signed a consent agreement with RIDOH.
As a result of the consent agreement between RIDOH and Calenda, “He is hereby issued a reprimand on his Rhode Island license and shall pay administrative fees in the amount of $1,100.00. The administrative fees must be paid within six ( 6) months from the date of ratification of this Consent Order by the Board and shall be made payable to the Rhode Island General Treasurer, and delivered to the Rhode Island Department of Health…”
Further, “[Calenda], at his own expense, shall complete and successfully pass a course pre-approved by the Board on the subject of Universal Protocol. The course must be completed within six ( 6) months from the ratification of this consent Order. Respondent shall be required to comply with any recommendations provided to him in writing from he course described herein."
Calenda signed the consent decree with RIDOH on Wednesday.
