UPDATED: Superior Court Presiding Judge Gibney to Step Down

GoLocal has learned that Rhode Island Superior Court Chief Justice Alice Gibney will be stepping down effective this fall. 

Gibney, who was appointed by Governor Donald Carcieri to serve as Chief Justice.

Gibney shared a portion of her letter to Governor Dan McKee, "After 44 years on the bench, I will be retiring effective October 31, 2025. It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to serve the citizens of Rhode Island and to have worked with scores of wonderful colleagues, staff, and members of the Bar. I have enjoyed every second.”

She received her J.D. in 1972 from Catholic University.

After graduation, Gibney became a Superior Court law clerk in 1973. She was in private practice with Anderson, Henning & Anderson from 1974 to 1978 and again from 1979 to 1982 with Boyer, Reynolds & Demarco.

 

From 1978 to 1979, Gibney was an assistant U.S. Attorney in Rhode Island.

She has been a Superior Court judge since 1984, and is a Roger Williams University School of Law adjunct professor.

One of the first women appointed to the Superior Court, Gibney led the court’s mediation program for 14 years.
