With 230 bed Middlesex Hospital leading the state, Connecticut placed 7 hospitals in the #50 through #100 overall New England rankings.
"All of our hospitals review their HCAHPS results on many levels as soon as the data are available. From the bedside caregivers to the Board, everyone in each hospital is committed to improving the patient experience. Each survey gives the patient an opportunity for open communication, enabling hospitals to find solutions to better serve patients," said Mary Cooper, MD, Chief Quality Officer, Connecticut Hospital Association.
Cooper continued, "Hospitals have instituted a number of innovations to address concerns raised in HCAHPS surveys. These innovations are in the areas of medication management, providing culturally competent care, improving communication with patients, and enhancing responsiveness to patient concerns. In recent years, Connecticut hospitals implemented a major patient safety initiative, high reliability, and hospitals are adopting similar methodology to improve the patient experience."
Built in 1975, Johnson Memorial Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient services, including medical and surgical, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, mental health, intensive/coronary care, oncology, physical rehabilitation and emergency care.
Highlights: 85% of patients who reported that YES,they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home.
Bristol Hospital has served the great Bristol area since 1921. Coming up on 100 years of service, Bristol Hospital’s reputation precedes it. The hospital is also the proud owner of an award-winning Intensive Care Unit as well as a state of the art 50,000 square foot surgical facility.
Highlights: 87% of Bristol Hospital patients received information about how to treat their recovery upon leaving the hospital.
Griffin Hospital is a not-for-profit acute care community hospital which serves the residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Region. This hospital is affiliated with New Haven’s Yale School of Medicine, as well as Quinnipiac’s Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine.
Highlights: 78% of patients reported that their doctors communicated well with them, and 77% of Griffin’s patients said the same of their nurses.
In 2009 Day Kimball Hospital re-branded to Day Kimball Healthcare. Day Kimball has a rich history of improvement and expansion throughout its life. Located in Putnam, CT the hospital has served citizens for well over 100 years.
Highlights: 70% of patients at Day Kimball Hospital reported that they always received help as soon as they requested it.
Milford Hospital was founded in 1920 and ever since its incorporation, this healthcare provider has been serving the residents of Greater New Haven and Fairfield Counties. This acute care community hospital offers a plethora of emergency and walk-in services while also specializing in joint replacement surgery, maternity care, and home care.
Highlights: 78% of patients said that their rooms and bathrooms were always clean.
Stamford Hospital is a not-for-profit organization who provides services to the area residents of both Fairfield County in Connecticut and Westchester County in New York. This hospital identifies its areas of expertise as: cancer care, heart services, orthopedics, and women’s health.
Highlights: 80% of surveyed patients stated that their doctors always communicated well with them, and 82% of Stamford Hospital patients said that their nurses also did a good job of communicating with them.
Sharon Hospital, located in Northwestern Connecticut, serves this state, as well as the residents of Massachusetts and New York. Sharon Hospital is an acute care community hospital which was founded in 1909 and has been providing quality care for over 100 years.
Highlights: 79% of patients reported that their doctors always communicated well with them, and 83% of patients said the same about their nurses.

Greenwich Hospital is an affiliate of Yale University School of Medicine and a member of the Yale New Haven Health System. This regional hospital, which was founded in 1906, has served as a major healthcare provider for Fairfield County, CT, and Westchester County, NY for over 100 years.
Highlights: 80% of patients said that their rooms and bathrooms were “always” clean, and 85% of patients said that they would definitely recommend the hospital to others.
This voluntary nonprofit hospital offers short term acute care to the citizens of central Connecticut, but also serves as a major cancer center for the larger community. Middlesex Hospital consistently provides its patients with world-class medical technology in a variety of healthcare fields, as they try to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors.
Highlights: In a recently conducted survey, 78% of Middlesex Hospital patients said that they would definitely recommend the hospitals to others following their stays.
