"Maine hospitals do very well in the HCAHPS survey. Last year, Maine hospitals were 4th best in the country with an average HCAHPS score of 75.5 percent. Maine hospitals strive to provide the best possible patient experience in their facilities and continually work on improving their survey results. In addition to individual hospital efforts, the Maine Hospital Association periodically hosts statewide meetings where hospitals learn best practices from each other and from across the nation to improve the patient experience," said Schnur.

For example, discharge planning now starts well before the end of the hospital stay, and discharge instructions are given both verbally and in writing, so that patients can understand no matter what their learning style. Nurses use “teach back” techniques to ensure that patients understand instructions and their medications. Some hospitals use interactive videos to teach patients about their conditions and what to expect from their treatment ."
