Top Lobbyist Gearing Up to Take Out School Committee President?

Nick Hemond
One of the top lobbyists in Providence is reportedly looking to unseat sitting School Board President Keith Oliveira -- and both school board members are remaining tight-lipped, as the board is slated to vote next month as to its leadership moving forward.

Multiple sources told GoLocal that School Board member Nick Hemond, who had been appointed by Providence's last Mayor Angel Taveras, is looking to line up the votes on the board to unseat incumbent Oliveira.

"There's been some discussion as to whether I want to continue," said Oliveira. "There'll be a board vote soon, I'll make a decision within the next few weeks."

"There's been no secret that I have fundamental and philosophical differences with the Mayor's office as to the role of the board and the Mayor's Office, and where the important decisions should be made," said Oliveira. "I wouldn't be surprised if they might want some new leadership, whether they have the votes is another thing."

Lobbying List

Lobbyist Hemond is la awyer with DarrowEverett, and is currently registered to lobby the city -- and state -- for a number of clients.

"In 2011, the Mayor of the City of Providence appointed Mr. Hemond to the Providence School Board, serving as an elected chairperson of the Board’s Committee on Policy. He has previously served as the President and currently serves as Vice President of the Board," according to Hemond's bio for DarrowEverett.

Hemond is currently registered to lobby the city for Cromwell Venture, LLC; HM Ventures Group; High Rock Development; Armory Revival Group; McInnis USA; and Buff Chace's Cornish Associates.

At the state level, Hemond is registered to lobby for the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Carpenters Local Union 94, UNITE Here Local 217, High Rock, Axcess Financial Services, and AAA.

Keith Oliveira
Hemond joined DarrowEverett after serving as campaign consultant for then-Providence City Council President Michael Solomon when he ran for Mayor of Providence in 2014.

"My focus is on working with our teachers, principals and families to ensure that we are creating an atmosphere that will address the needs of our students and ensure that they have the opportunity to succeed," said Hemond on Monday.  Hemond did not answer whether or not he is actively seeking the President position.

"As for the work I do in and around the City, obviously I do not lobby the school department and never will. In the event that I ever had an issue that could raise the potential for a conflict then I would go about the appropriate process for disclosing the potential conflict to the ethics commission and recuse myself from the matter in accordance with state and local rules and regulations," said Hemond.

"Providence Schools have been a central part of my life since I walked through the doors of Robert F. Kennedy school in 1991 and it has been a great honor to have the opportunity to serve on the Board for the past 5 years and I look forward to being sworn in for another term," said Hemond."
