Warwick Mayor Solomon Issues Statement on Mediation Efforts

Warwick Mayor Joseph Solomon has issued a statement regarding the mediation with the Warwick School Department.

Solomon’s statement comes after school officials said in a statement that he pulled out of mediation efforts. Solomon refused to be interviewed.

The statement comes less than a month after the Warwick School Committee voted to cut after-school sports, and other activities to meet budget constraints.

Solomon’s Statement is as follows:

“The funding of education for FY19-FY20 between the City of Warwick and the Warwick School Department has brought many challenges to the forefront. The rumors that mediation efforts have been halted and/or suspended are grossly inaccurate and are a complete misrepresentation of the good faith efforts brought forth by my administration to resolve these serious budgetary concerns. During the mediation session relative to FY18 – FY19 a mediator issued a decision that was agreed upon by both parties. As such, that matter has been put to rest.

As we prepare to mediate the FY19-FY20 budget, my priorities will continue to be that of the schoolchildren, and the sports and extracurricular activities that they deserve. I will not allow the emotions of our students, parents, faculty or staff to be used as pawns as these discussions proceed. I remain committed to ensuring Warwick remains fiscally responsible and that the monies in any budget are spent wisely and for the greater good of our community. I continue to encourage all those involved with these discussion to remember the needs and quality of education that our students deserve. As always, I remain committed to our students, and hope this next round of mediation results in productive discussions and a positive outcome.”
